Where are we now? - technology and disaster response in Silicon Valley
CrisisCampSiliconValley will be hosted by Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley in the NASA Ames Research Park, Moffett Field, California from March 26th through 28th, 2010, as part of the Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley Disaster Management Initiative (http://sv.cmu.edu/dmi). CrisisCampSiliconValley will be a goal-oriented bar-camp - bring your demos/data and be ready to communicate. CrisisCamps bring together domain experts, developers and first responders around improving technology and practice for humanitarian crisis; CrisisCampSiliconValley will focus on the Bay Area and beyond. 6 prizes for further development of technology and collaboration (e.g., prototype testing, funding roadmaps) will be awarded (see below).
We'll start off with a kick-off reception with refreshments, posters and demos from 5.30pm-7pm on Friday March 26th. Bar-camp-style rapid-fire project descriptions and needs will begin on Friday night after the reception ending at 10pm, and then the real work starts on Saturday at 8am, with an afternoon break for daylight demos, and last all night with prizes on Sunday afternoon, wrapping up at 4pm. Email us if you are interested in providing a demo during the Friday reception.
This event is free and open to the public. Sign-up quickly, because attendance may be capped.
NOTE: A valid government-issued picture ID (e.g., drivers license or passport) is required to get onto the NASA Ames Research Park, where the event will be held. If you are coming by taxi or limo, the driver must have a valid government-issued picture.

Development Prizes:
We are excited to announce that fantastic prizes promoting development and collaboration will be awarded for excellent CrisisCampSiliconValley projects!! Projects interested in being considered will give a short presentation on Sunday afternoon, and prizes will be awarded immediately after.
The following prizes will awarded for excellent CrisisCampSiliconValley projects based on merit and potential benefit of the prize to the project:
Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley has made arrangements with NASA Ames Research Center to collaborate on three prizes for exceptional projects:
- For an exceptional concept-stage project, Chief Robert Dolci and Dr. Martin Griss will convene a panel of subject matter experts relevant to the winning concept to provide value-added feedback for further development.
- For an exceptional prototype or near-prototype stage project, Chief Dolci will arrange for a team of highly qualified emergency responders and the use of the NASA DART Collapsed Structure Rescue Training Site to demonstrate proof-of-concept of the project.
- For CrisisCampSiliconValley participants interested in participating in DART’s annual 6-day Collapsed Structure Rescue Class, which will be held the last week of April 2010, two individuals will be selected based on the merits of their proposed projects. (http://dart.arc.nasa.gov/Rescue/CSRC.html#overview). This invitation-only high-level training course for emergency responders is an ideal setting for technologists to observe advanced emergency response training and operations. For the awardees, hands-on participation in training activities could occur based on the desires of the participant and discretion of the lead instructor. NASA Ames DART will provide personal protective equipment, and Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley will fund on-campus housing and meals for the 6-day course. Participants will provide appropriate clothing and steel-toed boots.
ClearWire will offer the following prizes for exceptional projects:
- The first 20 entries to submit accepted position papers or proposals for a Mobile Broadband 4G Crisis application will get a free 4G WiMAX USB modem w/ Innovation Network service and an exclusive T-Shirt from Clearwire. These will be made available as soon as the paper is accepted. (Template at :http://www.cmu.edu/silicon-valley/dmi/workshop/position-paper-template.pdf. Email completed papers to disaster@sv.cmu.edu)
- Up to 3 CrisisCampSiliconValley teams with demonstrable Mobile Broadband 4G Crisis applications will get an exclusive invitation to participate in a showcase at the June 15 4G WiMAX symposium in Palo Alto to demonstrate their concept and be recognized by a panel of business leaders.
- The CrisisCampSiliconValley finalist team that demonstrates the most outstanding Crisis management breakthrough using 4G WiMAX technology will get 2 days of lab time in the Clearwire corporate labs w/ support and assistance from our engineering team along with up to $500 of travel expenses.
WiMAX:
All CrisisCampSiliconValley participants are eligible for CLEAR’s free 4G WiMAX Innovation Network Service through the ClearWire Developer Program. We encourage you to sign up in advance so that you can use the Innovation Network Service at CrisisCampSiliconValley where CLEAR’s 4G WiMAX mobile broadband service will be available. About CrisisCamp
CrisisCamp will bring together domain experts, developers, and first responders around improving technology and practice for humanitarian crisis management and disaster relief.
Each and every day, people across the world can find themselves in crisis. Whether it be for a day, a month or an area of social distress, we all have a common need to connect with loved ones, access information and offer assistance to others.
During Transparency Camp 09 and Government 2.0 Camp, several campers exchanged a host of ideas on the need to better connect people with their social networks and information through the use of technology, especially during times and places of crisis. For example, campers shared how mobile innovation on mobile health and alternative power supplies was happening in Africa. Others shared how how citizens of the cloud used their technical skills to aggregate data to help people (often in another part of the world) synthesize desperate pieces of information into something they could understand. We uncovered a dividing line between international humanitarian relief and domestic crisis response. We saw common themes across all efforts including: the use of mobility, the Internet as a common coordination platform, the need for volunteers and the ability to provide alternative community communications access areas. By the end of the tweet-up, we had 40 volunteers sitting around in a circle with an agreement that there should be a forum to exchange these ideas. And it was there, where a common goal brought government, NGOs, private sector, hackers and activists together to create CrisisCamp.
CrisisCamps are hosted in a barcamp style where great minds come together to share their knowledge and expertise for social good.
